Vietnam’s Education and the lesson from the U.S Educational Crisis Management

(HUFO) – On the 21st of November 2018, the Ho Chi Minh City Union of Friendship Organizations (HUFO), and the Vietnam – U.S Friendship Association organized the conference “Vietnam’s Education and the lesson from the U.S Educational Crisis Management” at the GEM Convention Center.

 

Among the attendees of this event is Mr. Nguyen Van Manh, Deputy Chairman of HUFO; MR. Phung Cong Dung, Chairman of The State Commission for Overseas Vietnamese; Dr. Nguyên Thi Ngoc Phuong, Chairwoman of the Vietnam – U.S Friendship Association. The conference also had the honor of the presence of important lecturers such as Professor Nguyen Minh Thuyet, editor-in-chief of the national textbook reform program; Mdm. Dam Bich Thuy, Director of Fullbright University; Mr. Nguyen Hoai Chuong, former Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education; Mr. Huynh The Du, PHd from the School of Public Policy and Administration and Mr. Pham Phu Ngoc Trai, CEO of Global Integration Business Consultants (GIBC).

 

In the opening speech to this annual conference, Doctor Nguyen Thi Ngoc Phuong, Chairwoman of the Vietnam – US Friendship Association of Ho Chi Minh City, highlighted the importance of education in shaping the future of the nation and introduced the topic of this year’s conference. Subsequently, Mr. Tran Ngoc Chau, Deputy Chairman of the Vietnam – US Friendship Association of Ho Chi Minh City gave the lead-in remarks, stating the lessons and experiences that the United States of America has attained in managing educational crises that affect the country in the last decades of the 20th Century, of which Vietnam can selectively obtain and apply in dealing with the challenges that it’s education sector is facing. The learning points that the United States have applied and achieved considerable results in improving the educational system are: Conduct Sociology research into the educational system and the truthful report of the findings; Focus on the middle to high school level in initiating reform efforts; Increase the role of big business in educational reforms and organize national education summits.

 

 

In their own remarks, the lecturers offer their own assessments of the Vietnamese educational system in its current performance compared to surrounding countries as well as the results achieved by Vietnamese students in competitions and general performances abroad. Concerning educational reforms, Mr. Nguyen Minh Thuyet remarked upon the misalignment between the expectation and the actual means available in reforming the educational system. The role of stake holders should be further promoted to solve the output problems for universities and to better motivate both teaching institutions and students to improve their own education with the purpose of a better integration into the global economy.

The conference was concluded with a question and answer session between the lecturer and other participants of the event, fostering a better understanding about the topic of discussion and to take away important pointers for self-improvements.
