Exhibition “Beautiful Handicrafts of Tohoku, Japan”

(HUFO) On October 31, the opening ceremony of Exhibition “Beautiful Handicrafts of Tohoku, Japan” took place at HCMC Exhibition House. It is held by the Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam, in cooperation with the Consulate General of Japan in Ho Chi Minh City, from 31 October to 10 November 2014.

Tohoku region, well-known for its beautiful mountains and landscapes as well as its rich culture and history, did suffer damage and losses including its arts and craft industry due to an unprecedented disaster. The exhibition aims to commemorate the disaster and wish that Tohoku would soon recover.

Giving a speech at the opening ceremony, Mr. Nakajima Satoshi, Japanese Consul General in HCMC, shared with Tohoku the losses from the unprecedented tsunami and earthquake disaster. Despite being severely damaged, people in Tohoku have been trying their utmost to get normality and peace restored as soon as possible. He hoped that this exhibition would make Vietnamese people know more about Japanese traditional culture. In addition, he was deeply grateful to Vietnamese people for the heartfelt sympathy, donation and support to Japanese people in the disaster on March 11, 2011.

The displays at exhibition are made from various materials like ceramic, lacquer, textile, metal, wood, and bamboo crafts. They highlight the high level of techniques of Tohoku traditional artisans and the beauty of its daily used implements since ancient times in Japan.
