Celebrating the Indonesian Independence Day

(HUFO) On the morning of August 22, at the Friendship House, the HCMC Union of Friendship Organizations (HUFO) and the HCMC Vietnam – Indonesia Friendship Association (HCMC VIFA) co-organized a ceremony in celebration of the 69th anniversary of Indonesian Independence Day.




Located in the Southeast Asia, Vietnam and Indonesia have many similarities in culture and history, especially in the movement of struggling for national independence. In Vietnam, this movement was marked by the victory of August Revolution 1945 and the declaration of Independence of President Ho Chi Minh in September, 1945. In Indonesia, an historic event took place on August 17th 1945 when the first Indonesian President Sukarno announced the declaration of Indonesian Independence in front of lots of people in Jakarta.      


Both nations have maintained a long – lasting friendship and officially established the diplomatic relations since December 30, 1955. Since then, the bilateral cooperation between Vietnam and Indonesia has been developing. In June 2013, two sides lifted ties to strategic partnership, opening up many opportunities for the cooperation. Up to July 2014, the Indonesia’s total investment in Vietnam reached 673.68 million USD with 30 projects. The bilateral trade between two sides reached 5.1 billion USD.

In his speech, Mr. Le Ton Thanh, Chairman of the HCMC Vietnam – Indonesia Friendship Association, said that the friendship between two countries during 60 years had been maintained and developed. Following this tradition, HUFO and HCMC VIFA has well cooperated with the Indonesian Consulate General and Indonesian Community in HCMC in holding numerous cultural, sport, social events such as: Indonesian Day in HCMC, “HCMC – Our common home” festival, ASEAN Friendship Table tennis Tournament, Exploring Indonesia contest, Indonesian Independence Day. Those events contributed to improving the mutual understandings between people of two countries.



Giving a speech at the ceremony, Mr. Tri Surya, Indonesian Acting Consul General in HCMC, said that in 2013 – 2014, Indonesian Government had offered Dharmasiswa scholarships to 19 Vietnamese students for studying Indonesian culture and language in Indonesia. There were also two Vietnamese students awarded Master scholarships under the Indonesia’s Developing Countries Partnership program on Scholarship. In addition, Indonesian community and the Alumni Association of Indonesia (IAI) have shown their enthusiasm through many social events including blood donation. Those things highlight the close friendship between two nations.

In 2015, Vietnam and Indonesia are celebrating the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations. HUFO and HCMC VIFA are planning to organize a chain of events on this special occasion.

The ceremony ended with lots of performances highlighting the culture of Vietnam and Indonesia.
